Root Care
Many times the most important part of trees is forgotten. The root collar and root zones are the most important part of your trees. Without a good foundation the tree can uproot and or die. When your tree is showing signs of stress, it is usually not from a recent problem. Trees can take a long time to show decline in health, especially if you are not familiar with trees. Roots that hold a tree up and provide essential nutrients and water to the tree can become sick, diseased, and or damaged from construction among other things. It is important to pay as much attention to the root crown as the tree crown that you can see.
Girdling roots are a major problem when it comes to your trees health. A girdling root is a root from a tree that cuts off the vascular system of the tree, if this problem is left uncorrected your tree will decline in health until it dies. Problems can be identified and corrected if they are identified in time.
Root rot is another large problem if you want your trees to remain upright. When you can determine if a tree has decay in the root system then you can more accurately predict the risk the tree posses, and possibly be able to remove the decayed roots and let the tree produce new ones before the tree becomes hazardous.
Landscaping and trenching where you can't see the root system is a bad idea you could be removing vital roots unknowingly and causing a severe decline in your trees health.
In urban and suburban areas we are seeing a trend, in trees being planted to deeply, this is causing some of the major problems mentioned above when it is not dealt with. I encourage you to ask questions about root systems. If you are in need of root collar excavations, radial trenching or if you are planning on installing sprinklers call us and we can provide you with a low impact excavation of the site so you don't damage important and delicate root zones.
We use an Air Spade which is a tool that excavates around the soil while not harming delicate roots or underground utility lines. Air is blown into the soil at mach 2 and it breaks up the compacted soil and it provides much needed air into the soil to make trees and shrubs more vigorous.
